One fundamental part of family life…it seems to me…is the existence of a family dog. The dog is the family mascot, the perpetual child, the protector, the alarm, the companion. The dog is always there. The dog is ever loyal and always eager to please. The dog’s only hope for reward is attention, doggie treats and a place by the family fire on a cold winter’s night.
Today I was talking to a friend who, if he were an online dating sort, which he most definitively is NOT, would have as his tag line, “Must Love Dogs”. This friend and I began a really random conversation about “The Family Dog”. As is often the case, one thought led to another and suddenly I was faced with the question about dogs, breeds, people’s temperaments, dog breed temperaments and the family dog. It seems there is a connect somewhere though I’m not sure where. Maybe you can help me sort it out by answering the following questions:
1. Are you a dog lover, cat lover or a no pets person and why?
2. If you are a dog lover, which breed would you most like to have and why? You get one choice for large dog and one choice for small dog.
Let the dog election begin!

I have 6 dogs, 1 cat, 1 llama, 1 horse, and despite my name, “no” birds!
I’ll admit the 6 dogs seems excessive, but there is a long story there about the family dog having a litter, each of the kids bonding with a different one, and their and their parents’ inability to play “Survivor” in deciding who got voted off the island! Now, the import of that decision has come home to us: the kids are grown and moving onto their lives, and mom and dad (in separate households now) are left with the care of the herd.
Why a dog? They fulfill so many functions, it is hard to list. My dad used to say: they eat the same food every day and never complain. For me, they possess one of the most sterling qualities we wish for in our partner: they get up in the morning when you do, they wait up for you everynight when you come home, never ask “where you’ve been,” and are great listeners! They are always genuinely happy to see you! Now that I’m single, if I could teach mine to rub my back or make a good cup of coffee in the morning, I might consider them a superior replacement for a human partner!
Big Dog: Labrador Retriever – energetic, dedicated, loves the water, shed very little.
Small Dog: English Springer Spaniel – handsome, sincere, ready to go to work anytime, and proud to serve.
Fun Topic – this could go in a million directions!
